If it’s any consolation, here in southern Louisiana near New Orleans “real” Xmas trees are collected and recycled into the marshes to help them hold a little more soil. It’s been quite a successful project over the years and even more important since Katrina had its terrible impact on the marshlands.

I still miss Northampton winters – they were so similar to my absolute ideal of winter, which was the one I spent in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon in high school. Perfect seasons!

Alas, Manchester gets next to no snow, just grey, damp cold that makes you feel miserable the entire winter.

Congrats on getting your own home and good for you all to be in a school district that funds programs for your child. My friend has two children with Asberger’s and she’s always saying she couldn’t survive without the help of the school.

Hey Sarah – thanks for the input. Mostly I’m concerned about explaining the whole concept of death to Vic in a way he’ll understand. It’s the “gone and won’t come back” bit. But then again, he may surprise me. He usually does.

I am sorry for your loss. A sudden, unexpected death in your immediate friend/family circle is so hard to take. Vic may actually take it better than an adult, because kids are so resilient and matter-of-fact (like cats in some ways). When you say she’s gone and not coming back and we’ll miss her, won’t we, he will accept it, absorb it, and move on. We adults are the ones who keep on saying, “What if?” and “Why?” I know I do, every day.
