7 Months

Dear Julien,

I’ve been sick this month so I’m behind on updating. I missed a whole week of work and lost track of time and you turned 7 months in there somewhere when I wasn’t paying attention. You’ve grown a second tooth since I last wrote, it came in right on the heels of the first, within just a few days. You’ve been making good use of your chompers since they came in, suddenly becoming extremely enthusiastic about food. It’s not enough for you to have puree, you eye all our plates with keen interest and lunge after the contents with wide open hands and eager grunts of hunger.

Last night we went out for sushi and you attacked the avocado from my avocado rolls on the end of chopsticks as if you were lost in the desert and being offered water for the first time in days. More, more, more your grunts seemed to say and if I wasn’t fast enough at providing you with another bite, you leaned forward and tried to grab my platter of various rolls, including some that you definitely couldn’t have!

You’re making all sorts of interesting sounds now, of late you’ve taken to cooing like a pigeon and making other bird-like chirps and trills along with your growing repertoire of consonant-vowel vocalizations. You’re starting to hold your hands up to me while saying “Mmmmm” or “Emmmmmmm” so the right sounds are starting to get sorted with the right people slowly but surely.

You’re starting to sign as well and responding to the sign for “milk”. If you want to nurse and I sign “milk” to you, you get all excited, your little face just lights up and you start scooting in place and grunting and reaching out all eager for some yum-yums.

You still want 16 ounces of breastmilk a day, but I can’t quite keep up with you, so you’re getting at least one bottle of formula most days and sometimes more if I’m late to pick you up. You also eat carrots, barley cereal, bananas, pears, applesauce and avocado and you love it all. Daddy gave you some peas the other day and you adored them but they gave you the worst poops ever, so we’re going to hold off on legumes for a bit longer. You’re coordinated enough to hold your own bottle now as well and you’re showing signs of having a good pincer grip, so feeding yourself is not far behind I’m sure.

You are on the verge of crawling: you’ve done the odd bunny-hop here and you keep trying so hard to put it all together. Frequently in the evening if I put you down for tummy time, you will push up onto all fours and rock back and forth and then give a big shove, bunny-hop once and then the whole posture falls apart and you’re back down on your tummy. This frustrates you sometimes and I have to pick you up and hug you and kiss you and encourage you all over again, but by and large you’re pretty mellow about it and keep trying. You also like to sit in the bassinet from your playard and play with toys. It’s a lot of fun to watch you playing by yourself or with your big brother.

Speaking of Victor, nobody can make you laugh like he does. His enthusiasm for playing with you and cuddling you is endless and when he cuts capers and makes faces at you, you laugh these big deep belly laughs that just make me laugh out loud too.

You’re showing some signs of separation anxiety but it’s not too bad so we’re playing lots of peekaboo with you and letting you know that it’s okay and we’re still here even when we’re out of sight. You love to play peekaboo and bounce up and down on my knee while I sing “Yankee Doodle” to you. You also love clapping games and you’re starting to clap your own hands together though you can’t quite do it twice in a row yet.

You’re very comfortable sitting up now and you join us at the table in your high chair for meals. You’re starting to really like holding onto my hands while you stand in place or bounce up and down on your toes. You’d probably also enjoy more time in your doorway jumper, but the only place we can put it is in the doorway to the bathroom which really isn’t the best place for it. At any rate, you’re getting really, really strong and into moving so I’m sure we’ll be chasing after you on all fours very very soon!
