Farewells

This is what I wrote and drew right before we left Belgium in the summer of 1985.

Dear Annabelle
we stayed at the garderie today because the gardeners where here. we move to the hotel tomorrow. I am both sad & happy to leave Bxls & all of my friends.

The house was packed, our bags were ready to go. School was almost over and we were going to live in a hotel downtown. My school friends had had a party for me during the last week of school. They gave me presents, their addresses and promised to write to me.

A year later they sent me a copy of their sixth grade class photo, signed on the back by each member of the class. I cried again because I missed them so much. My own sixth grade class seemed so lacking by comparison.

I'm better at saying good-bye now. But I still cry and I still miss the places and people left behind keenly. I'm not very good at letting things go.

I don't know if I ever will be.
