Isn’t it ironic?

Jul 29th, 2009 by heidi

Yes, Alanis, unlike you I recognize irony when I see it.

Irony is tapdancing with joy when I left Syracuse because they were headed for a “heat wave” of 85 degrees this week and I was returning to the grey, cloudy Pacific Northwest…only for the forecast high today in Syracuse to be 83 and the current high here in Seattle to be 100.

Yes, my friends, the cold and gloomy PNW is currently roasting and my brain with it.

For those of you mocking our weakness? Bear in mind that the vast majority of houses here do NOT have air conditioning, which means that with it being in the mid-80s at night, we have only fans to cool us. Not nice. Not nice at all.

I’m ever so grateful to work in an air-conditioned downtown tower block. Heaven bless modern conveniences (and heaven help us if the a/c dies).

Try draping a damp pillowcase over the fan?

Uuuuugh. It was bad enough being in Northampton over the summer, when we got kicked out of Seelye lab at about 9pm (or was it 10?) and they’d re-tarred the roof outside of 44 Green St so we couldn’t keep our windows open for fear of dying of the stench, but at least it only got up into the low 90s. High of 100? Ouch! Dare I ask what the heat index is?
