A Wee Bit Broken

Mar 22nd, 2008 by heidi

Well…

I’m not quite as unlucky as my friend Odie, but I’ve had my own little injury adventure today.

As embarrassingly stupid injuries go, this ranks up there!  I was having a bit of a lie-in this morning, since Graham got up with Ciaran, and was lying on my side when I decided that I needed to adjust my pillow.  Raised my head just a bit to pull the pillow under my head…and heard an awful snap-CRUNCH sound, accompanied by PAIN!!

Tried to get up but couldn’t turn my head properly and moving my arm HURT!  Lay in bed a bit longer to see if it would go away but no, the whole right side of my neck went stiff and painful every time I moved the wrong way.

A trip to A&E later, I have apparently managed to sprain my neck OVER EASTER WEEKEND and have been sent home with ibuprofen, paracetamol (Tylenol), codeine and Diaz*pam.  Woo!  Pain relief city!

Wonder how many drug-seeking hits I’ll get with THAT string?!

Ciaran’s basically self-weaned over the last few weeks, so I won’t nurse him down for his nap (the only nursing he DOES anymore) for the next few days while I’m on the meds and, who knows, perhaps he’ll be completely weaned by the end of it.  He’s NOT happy about not nursing down for his nap (he’s not asking to nurse but he’s screaming bloody murder and not wanting to go to sleep) but, well, I need to not be in excruciating pain, either.  Call me a selfish mother if you must!

It hurts if I turn my head too far to the right and it hurts if I move my right arm the wrong way (hurts in my neck, that is, not my arm).  My right hand is a bit tingly but the doctor felt that it’s just a result of the pain of the sprain rather than any kind of nerve damage I might have done.

It sucks because if I’m not feeling better by Tuesday, we’ll miss this week’s swimming lesson and Ciaran LOVES his Mimming (and we can’t go for our family swim tomorrow anyway, because the pool will be closed for Easter!).  It also sucks that this is over Easter weekend, so I’d like to be out and about as much as we can with the cold, wet, occasionally snow-flurrying weather.  It also saddles Graham with all the nappy-changing/toddler-catching duties, since I can’t do much of anything that requires movement.  Even bending my head down to read is a bit painful, so I’m having to hold books up with my left hand to read them!

Keep your fingers crossed that it’s better soon, please?!  I’m on vacation next week, so I really DO need to be able to go to work this week, too!

Well, the same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I was leaning against the wall behind my bed, surfing around the web as I usually do (and as I’m doing now), and just as I lifted myself away from the wall that whole section from neck to shoulder went hot and screeching with huge pain. I didn’t take anything stronger than Tylenol for it, but what helped most was a heating pad with a massage setting, small enough to be very flexible but large enough to cover most of the really painful parts.

    Good luck!!

If ANYONE dares to call you a selfish mum, this badass (let’s pretend) Yank mama from the “holler” will swim across the Atlantic and kick some hardcore ass!

I hope you recover quickly, and enjoy the buzz. *lots of love*
