13 August, 1998 Programmer
A programmer, I am not. I may have taken classes on Perl script and I may just have written a fairly awkward but usable piece of code for work, but that still does not make me a programmer. I'm afraid that I suffer far too much from a lack of intuitive logic to make the leap to that level. I can design (well, at least I think I can, let me know what you think) and make interfaces, I can make pretty graphics, I can write and I can draw. But I just don't think I have what it takes to be a real programmer. I can cobble together just enough PERL to make some pretty basic things work. But don't ever expect me to roll out software. Not no way, not no how. No. No. I think this is a clear cut case of the horse finding its colors. The grad school idea was the right one. I definitely should go leaping and bouncing back into the liberal arts. If I'm not going to concentrate on graphic design and interface design on the web then I might as well just look elsewhere for my next career move. On a slightly related note, while I'm attending said grad school, as a result of a new software system work is buying, I may soon be happily relieved of the majority of my dull, boring and inanely robotic production duties. This will leave me free to soak up as much A/V multimedia knowledge as I can find room for in my little brain. So I may soon become the resident A/V guru at work. But that may just be a pipe dream. At any rate, I am flying to California on Saturday to attend the O'Reilly Perl Conference which runs through next Thursday. Updates will probably not appear until then. I am also very busy until September 1, which is why the Flights section of Owl's Nest will not, be ready to go on August 15th as I had heretofore claimed, but has moved to the more ambiguous "coming soon" category, which means "when I have time". I have way too many deadlines to count, all rushing towards me at hyper-speed making me want to run like a rabbit for the nearest bolt-hole. But of course I'll just to have to stand and take it like a woman. I'll be back to regular posting some time soon -- really. |
